Effect Precedes Cause

Nazri wants bill to protect whistleblowers tabled soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz will push for the Witness Protection Bill to be tabled in Parliament as soon as possible and for it to be made retrospective.

He said he planned to raise the matter at tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting.

Nazri said he was in favour of the Government giving an assurance that police would protect the whistleblowers of a video clip showing a prominent lawyer allegedly brokering the appointment of top judges.

“We need the cooperation of sources and we must provide (police) protection (for them to come forward). We must not run away from our responsibilities,” he said.

Clarifying comments he made on Sunday that whistleblowers were already protected under the Witness Protection Act, Nazri said the fact was that the bill was still in the process of being drafted.

“What I meant was that there are already other mechanisms in place which provide for police protection,” he said.

Such a mechanism, he added, could also apply in the lawyer video clip case where the source could seek police protection to come out in the open.

I wish we had something like CSPAN so that I could see how Nazri raises the matter tomorrow. After official responses from KeADILan and the Bar Council in favour of setting up such an Act, he now wants to raise the matter and take credit for it? Shouldn’t there be a matter raised about a minister misleading the public by quoting details from an Act that he himself made up? No surprise that such a bill is still in the process of being drafted – he only needed to start work on it yesterday after getting caught in a lie.

I am suddenly reminded of a comment by Captain Janeway, a fictitious starship captain from Star Trek : Voyager.

One of the most difficult things to understand in temporal mechanics is that effect can precede cause.

The effect : Nazri saying witnesses related to the video clip are already protected under the Witness Protection Act.

The cause : Getting the Act approved and making it retrospective.

So at this point in time, Nazri’s statement on Sunday is a clear lie. But in the future once the Act is in place, the statement becomes true! It makes sense once you let go of the concept of linear time 😉

I wonder what the budget for the plastic surgery is like, can the government remake your face so you look like a famous person, or will they just dye your hair, give you a pair of coloured contacts and a fake beard due to ‘budget cuts’?
