ACA Blame Game

ACA appeals for complete copy of Lingam video clip

PUTRAJAYA: Investigations into the authenticity of a video clip allegedly showing a lawyer discussing judicial appointments with a judge are being hampered by the Anti-Corruption Agency’s inability to get hold of the full recording.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail has appealed to anyone with the complete copy to come forward. He said the ACA had to determine the authenticity of the video clip before proceeding.

“If it is (authentic), then that will be cause for further investigation. Whoever is in possession of the copy should co-operate with the ACA to conclude its probe,” he said.

Gani said there was no problem in protecting the identity of or providing security to the source of the recording.

“To me this is a minor issue. I can guarantee that all these will be taken care of,” he said.

The ACA has recorded statements from Keadilan adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, lawyer Datuk V. K. Lingam and a tycoon mentioned in the recording.

ACA deputy director-general Datuk Abu Kassim Mohamed said a provision in the Anti-Corruption Act accorded immunity to informers.

“Even the courts cannot compel us to reveal our sources,” he said.

The panel — whose members are Tan Sri Haidar Mohd Noor, Datuk Mahadev Shankar and Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye — have been given 30 working days from the date of their appointment on Sept 27 to complete their investigation and produce a report to the government.

Meanwhile, Sivarasa said the authenticity of the video could only be called into question if the lawyer denied having conducted the conversation with the judge.

Strange that I missed this in the papers the other day. Now the AG has jumped onboard, trying to lure Whistle Blower out. Unfortunately the fact that Anwar had stated that the video was an edited version has worked in their favour (by ‘their’ I mean Nazri, AG, Chief Judge etc. everyone who wants this video matter to go away).

If there is no problem with protecting the identity of Whistle Blower, why did the ‘de facto’ Law Minister Nazri:

  1. Quote an Act that did not exist?
  2. Offer plastic surgery as one of the forms of protection?
  3. Offer protection providing the Whistle Blower came forward and specified what he/she wanted?

I don’t know how VK Lingam handled the ACA interview – if he denied it, then he would have vested interest in finding a look-a-like or sound-a-like to take the fall. If he admitted it then he screws Fairuz, someone important that he most likely wouldn’t want to screw with for fear of retribution.
