ACA wraps up video clip probe

PUTRAJAYA: The Anti-Corruption Agency has wrapped up its investigations into the “Lingam” video clip. The agency will forward its findings to the prosecution unit soon for recommendation on the next course of action.

The ACA, sources said, came to this decision yesterday after recording statements from everyone related to the case.

They included the senior judge that lawyer Datuk V.K. Lingam was allegedly speaking to in the brokering of judicial positions in the video clip.

The source said the ACA’s investigations had hit a brick wall at the final stages of investigations as Parti Keadilan Rakyat adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was supposed to have surrendered a full version of the clip, only wanted to hand over a thumbdrive containing a copy of the recording.

“The ACA needs to have the original copy of the video clip, not just a copy of it in a thumbdrive.

“We have sent the copy for analysis to many experts, but none can determine the authenticity of the tape, or determine that the person in it or on the other side, are those being alleged.”

He said material as crucial as the clip, if needed in probes, had to be in its original form as there was a risk of it being tampered with.

– quoted from an article published in NST on 27th October 2007 (link)

The foolishness of the ACA is apalling. What are they expecting, microfilm? A DV tape? The video clip is digital, a copy is indistinguishable when viewed. ACA staff must be behind in their understanding of technology.

Ok, joking aside it is possible that the ACA is hoping to get a file timestamp of the original video file, so they can figure out the exact date the video is taken – that sounds fair. A copy may not retain that information. BUT a timestamp is so easily faked that the need for the original video is not necessary at all.

On the ‘experts’ not being able to verify that VK Lingam is the man in the video I have to say that these experts were either not experts or were handicapped by being given inadequate/irrelevant information. I would have expected the Hong Kong experts to have been given the video, along with photos and audio/video recordings of VK Lingam and Tun Ahmad Fairuz. If they were given less then what can I say, you reap what you sow.
