Lingam’s Stage(d) Entrance

Lingam’s surprise appearance

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk V.K. Lingam, the lawyer at the heart of the Royal Commission of Inquiry hearing, made a surprise appearance in court yesterday.

Businessman Loh Mui Fah had just testified that he had visited Lingam’s house on Dec 20, 2001 and witnessed a telephone conversation, when inquiry officer Datuk Nordin Hassan asked if he could identify the lawyer.

Commission chairman Tan Sri Haidar Mohd Noor asked: “He’s here?”

“Yes, he’s here,” Nordin said, gesturing towards Lingam who had emerged from a side door.

There was a collective murmur as Lingam, dressed in a navy suit, a light blue shirt and a red-and-white striped tie, bowed low to the commissioners and smiled.

“Is this Datuk V.K. Lingam whose house you went to on Dec 20, 2001?” Nordin asked.

“Yes, that is V.K. Lingam. I went to his house that night,” Loh replied.

“Is this also the person talking on the telephone, as shown in the video clip?” Nordin asked.

“Yes,” Loh confirmed, nodding.

Nordin then excused Lingam, who bowed low once again before exiting.

This reads like some kind of comedy – I mean honestly, Lingam just popped in, bowed low and smiled…then bowed again and left? It sounds a bit creepy too..imagine a tall dark figure entering the room, never says anything, just smiles..I’m suddenly thinking of Grand Vizier Jaafar from Aladdin or a Nazghul with more personality. A few comic ideas came to mind, but I went with the following :
