Rice for Votes

Wan Azizah to defend her seat

GEORGE TOWN: Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the sole Parti Keadilan Rakyat representative in Penang, has confirmed that she would seek re-election in the coming general election.

Meanwhile, state PKR deputy chairman Jason Ong Khan Lee lodged a police report against Bukit Bendera MP Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye and Kebun Bunga assemblyman Quah Kooi Heong, claiming that both men had bribed Rifle Range flat residents with bags of rice.

He claimed that residents were given rice bags carrying the BN logo and told to vote for the coalition in the general election.

This is truly bizarre – I’m talking about rice for votes of course. Last year at Ijok, cash was given for votes. This year…rice? I have to ask:

Is BN so poor they have to give out rice instead?

Are Penang citizens so cheap that rice is more effective at buying votes compared to money?

A friend of mine commented that for Asians, rice is life as it is a primary food source for many of us. So by giving rice, BN is giving life. Its an amusing interpretation though of course far too abstract an idea to be used to convince the average voter. Excellent, excellent material for comics though 🙂
